How to choose the right computer ups or SMPS?
This question is often confusing for many people and there are always rumors about the power supply unit and computer-ups combination such as will 600-watt ups will work with an 800-watt power supply unit. Today in this article I am going to explain to you the right guide for choosing and calculating the right UPS for your pc.
You can find many UPS in the market and the most common ups you will find will be of 600 watts or 300 watts but is that means you can not run your pc having 1300 watt power supply unit, no it’s not you can easily run a pc having 1300 watts of PSU on ups having 600 watts rated capacity.
Here 600 which is labeled on ups means that you can get 600 watts per hour which means if you are going to use 1300 watts or 900 watts PSU with 600 watts ups then the ups can provide a backup for some minutes for which UPS’s are designed for.
Now I am going to explain to you some electronics basics by which you can easily calculate the battery backup time of your ups.
- The formula for calculating discharge rate of current is = Load in watts/ Battery voltage
- The formula for calculating battery backup time = Battery AH/ discharge rate
So let’s take 600 watts ups and take pc having an 800-watt power supply unit.
- So the discharge current will be = 1040/ 12v = 86
(here load is 1040 because 800-watt PSU will suck 1040 watt as it is only 70% efficient)
- Now battery backup will be = 7 AH / 86 = 0.081 hrs = 5 mins
(nearly all ups in the market have a battery with 7 amps of current)
So the 600 watts ups will provide a backup time of only 5 minutes.
Here I will recommend you to purchase APC ups with two battery if you are using 1300 watts power supply since two batteries will have 7 amps + 7 amps which will be combined to form 14 amps of current which can provide you with 7 to 10 mins of battery backup.
The best high-end UPS currently I will recommend you is, cyber power CP1500PFCLCD this up comes with the best capacity of 900 watts which can easily handle all the gaming giants present in the market for up to 10 to 20 minutes.
Here the most important things which you should always keep in your mind that UPS’s are not designed for continuous use after power cut but it is designed to avoid fluctuation in the workflow. After the power failure just tries to switch off your computer as quickly as possible since it will be good for the life of your ups. Otherwise, just plug your ups in your household Inverter and use it safely.
